Apparently, a nearly two-week stretch in Ukraine — including trips to the north and east, considerably closer to the front — wasn't exciting enough. My traveling companions managed to talk me into traveling to Syria to check in on how the new government is taking shape, after dictator Bashar al-Assad's regime collapsed like a Jenga tower back in December.
