Think it over: Palestinian Islamic Jihad endorsed Hamas's response to a U.S. plan to end the war in Gaza, which could help speed the release of Israeli captives still held by both groups. Israeli strikes persisted with less intensity. Gazans hope it's not another false dawn. Israeli bulldozers in the West Bank are burying hopes for a Palestinian state.
Ukraine: A large Russian air assault struck some of Ukraine's main gas-production facilities, in some cases causing critical damage ahead of winter. U.S. Tomahawk-missile shipments to Ukraine are unlikely, sources say. Polish police arrested a Ukrainian diver wanted by Germany on suspicion of being involved with explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipeline.

Trump starves Democratic strongholds of funding

Cut off: Trump froze $2.1 billion in Chicago Transit Authority funding in the midst of the government shutdown and may make cuts to what he called "Democrat agencies." FEMA said it stopped distributing emergency-preparedness funds to states until they provide population counts that account for migrants deported since Trump took office. Democrats are rallying around healthcare to get a boost in the 2026 midterms. Our On Assignment podcast covers the intimidation and harassment of federal workers by a group linked to Trump.
News from the USA: Apple is removing ICE-tracker apps from its store under Justice Dept. pressure. ICE was on the move in Chicago overnight. The Supreme Court is set to scrutinize presidential powers. The FBI cut ties with the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center. It put an agent on leave after he refused to arrange a perp walk for James Comey. The White House said it will use money to encourage colleges and universities into toeing its ideological lines. And what exactly are the U.S. physical-fitness military requirements? Generals of all sizes want to know.

Police accidentally shot Manchester synagogue-attack victim

Aftermath: Police said they also shot one of the survivors while trying to stop an attacker who drove a car into pedestrians and stabbed people at a synagogue during Yom Kippur. The UK plans to tighten rules for migrants who want to settle by making applicants prove their value to society, including being able to speak a "high standard" of English.
Europe: German police arrested three men they suspect of preparing an act of violence against Jewish targets for Hamas. Serbian police arrested 11 people suspected of placing pigs' heads outside mosques and targeting Jewish sites in and around Paris.

Morocco protest violence grows

Demonstrations: Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch said he was open to dialogue to end youth protests that resulted in two deaths, hundreds of arrests and injuries, ransacked buildings and torched cars. Madagascar is facing its greatest unrest in years. Cameroon's 92-year-old president is facing an unexpected challenge in his run for an eighth term: his 27-year-old daughter.
Consequences: A Congolese military court sentenced former DRC President Joseph Kabila to death in absentia after convicting him of war crimes, treason and crimes against humanity. A week-long fire that ravaged the Etosha National Park likely will hurt Namibia's tourist industry.

A surfeit of lap dances

Trouble: A New York state auditor who allegedly accepted lap dances to help the parent company of Rick's Cabaret and other strip clubs avoid millions of dollars in taxes was indicted for fraud. Charlie Javice was sentenced to seven years in prison for defrauding JPMorgan. Massachusetts' former top federal prosecutor agreed to a public reprimand by state-bar regulators for multiple ethics violations.
Defeat: Nirvana fended off another lawsuit by a man who accused the band of distributing child pornography by using a photo of him as the naked swimming baby on the cover of the "Nevermind" album. Amazon defeated a bias lawsuit filed by a Black worker who was placed on a performance-improvement plan.
