Dear Diogenes:

Democrats and the media keep pushing the emotional claim that guns are the leading cause of death among children. Despite the constant repetition, the claim is a lie. In my new piece at The Federalist, I walk through the numbers for both those under 18 and under 15. For children under 15 in 2023, there were 1,654 suffocation deaths compared to 778 firearm deaths—even using the counting methods preferred by gun-control advocates.

A couple of weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal published a "news" article criticizing the rise in justifiable homicides following the adoption of Stand Your Ground laws. The article implied that a person could kill someone and then escape punishment simply by claiming fear for their life. Professor Carl Moody, our research director, and I each sent in letters correcting the article, though neither was published. We explained that the law does not allow someone to justify homicide solely by claiming a belief that force was necessary. Instead, a reasonable third party must believe the defendant faced a serious risk of injury or death, and the response must be proportional to the threat. We also noted that while justifiable homicides increased, murder rates actually fell—dropping 8 percent in the five years after Stand Your Ground laws were adopted. That seems as the laws worked exactly as intended.

While I normally focus on crime issues, I'm also an economist, and I couldn't resist writing an op-ed at RealClearPolitics addressing another misleading claim from Democrats and the media—that Trump "gave" $40 billion to Argentina. The money in question was a currency swap: the U.S. provided dollars and Argentina simultaneously provided an equivalent value of Argentine pesos. Calling it "aid" ignores the key fact that Argentina "gave" money right back to us. My piece breaks down the numbers, showing that because the peso appreciated, the U.S. actually made a profit on the swap.

My research on errors in the FBI crime data, primarily their data on active shooting attacks, has gotten more media attention. Radio interviews included: St. Louis's giant KFTK-FM, Southern Texas' KEYS, Cleveland's Bob Frantz Show, and Armed American Radio. Our work on the unprecedented percentage surge in violent crime during the Biden administration has also gotten media coverage, with appearances on Bill Martinez's national radio show, Wisconsin's Vicki McKenna Show, Cincinnati's giant 50,000-watt WLW, and Las Vegas' giant 50,000-watt KXNT-AM. Both of these topics as well as much else was covered on my appearance on western Montana's KGVO.

My research on errors in the FBI's crime data—especially their reporting on active shooting incidents—continues to draw media attention. I discussed these issues in interviews with St. Louis's giant KFTK-FM, Southern Texas' KEYS, Cleveland's Bob Frantz Show, and Armed American Radio. Our work on the unprecedented percentage surge in violent crime during the Biden administration has also received coverage, including appearances on Bill Martinez's national radio show, Wisconsin's Vicki McKenna Show, Cincinnati's giant 50,000-watt WLW, and Las Vegas' giant 50,000-watt KXNT-AM. Both of these topics as well as much else was covered on my appearance on western Montana's KGVO.

We continue to collect examples of how the entertainment media portrays gun issues. NBC's Chicago PD has yet another example of criminals using machine guns. The film The Green Bag includes another example—this time, simply pretending that someone had a gun was enough to stop a black man from being further beaten.

Our list of defensive gun uses by people legally carrying guns in public that got media attention illustrates 25 cases from February

If you haven't already seen it, please watch our new video with John Stossel, which covers our new research showing errors in the FBI's active shooting reports.

For those who haven't already done so, if you would like to help us get the information out to others, please consider posting reviews of our website on the Google business page that we have set up. The more positive reviews people post, the more Google will feature our webpage in their searches. Thank you very much!

We need help getting our research out. It doesn't do us any good to do all this work if people don't see it. If you have friends you think might find our emails interesting, please encourage them to sign up by sending them the link here. Thank you very much.

We need your support to continue doing the work that we do. I don't think that there is any organization with as small of a budget that regularly produces as much as we do. Thank you very much.
