Israeli military says ceasefire takes effect in Gaza, raising hopes for ending the war . . . A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas came into effect in Gaza on Friday, the military said, hours after Israel's Cabinet approved a deal to pause the fighting and exchange the remaining hostages for Palestinian prisoners. Tens of thousands of people who had gathered in Wadi Gaza in central Gaza started walking north after the Israeli military's announcement at noon local time. Beforehand, Palestinians reported heavy shelling in parts of Gaza throughout Friday morning, but no significant bombardment was reported after. Associated Press

How Trump's envoys got Gaza deal over the finish line . . . Envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner dictated the final compromises to speed the talks to completion. The issues included where Israeli troops would withdraw to, the mechanics of the hostage release and prisoner exchange, how aid would flow into the Gaza Strip and which Palestinian prisoners would come out of Israel, said the person, who like others in this story was granted anonymity to discuss sensitive negotiations. Trump doesn't get Nobel Peace Prize; Venezuelan María Corina Machado awarded . . . President Trump failed in his bid to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, with the Norwegian Nobel committee announcing Friday that María Corina Machado was given this year's award for promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said Machado represented the true spirit of the Nobel prize, as a unifying figure, determined in her commitment to peaceful protection of democracy at a time when it is under threat acutely in Venezuela but also around the world. So now being a "unifying figure" is a requirement for the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump is a polarizing figure who, incidentally, has been working to create peace all over the world. The Nobel committee had its last vote Monday, just as Trump was pressing to add to his successfully conduct of the impossible task of fostering peace in the Middle East. If this were Obama, he would have received the prize at the very least to encourage finalization of a deal.

New York Attorney General Letitia James charged in fraud case after pressure campaign by Trump . . . New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday in a mortgage fraud case that President Donald Trump urged his Justice Department to bring after vowing retribution against some of his biggest political enemies. James, a Democrat who infuriated Trump after his first term with a lawsuit alleging that he built his business empire on lies about his wealth, was charged with bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution in connection with a home purchase in Norfolk, Virginia, in 2020. Last Friday, violent text messages from Jones were exposed, including messages in which he wished death upon former Virginia House Speaker Todd Gilbert and his family. Leiendecker, former GOP election reform advocate, has officially become the sole owner of Dominion after making the deal contingent on dropping several remaining lawsuits against prominent conservatives and One America News Network. Judge partially blocks Trump's Chicago troop deployment

Judiciary chairman says impeachment is 'on the table' for anti-Trump judges . . . House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan said impeachment of judges who issue "stupid" rulings thwarting President Trump is "on the table," though he said Congress needs to explore other options first. The Ohio Republican, in a wide-ranging interview with The Washington Times, also said other former senior officials could be in line for indictment following that of former FBI Director James Comey. Since the pandemic, buyers on auto-dealer lots have encountered surging sticker prices and smaller incentives from automakers to lessen the blow. To afford an automobile, more consumers, especially lower-income families, have resorted to buying used cars and taking out longer loans. Now, more are falling behind on their loans, signaling that lower-income consumers are struggling to afford payments as wages stagnate and unemployment ticks higher. Wall Street Journal

Sanders plans 'robot tax' legislation to save jobs from AI . . . Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is planning to introduce artificial intelligence legislation that would impose a "robot tax" on large corporations that replace workers with AI or automation. A former firefighter in Guadeloupe with no criminal record walked into a supermarket located near the local police station with a balaclava over his mouth and holding a firearm. After demanding all the money in the cash register and helping himself to "a piece of Emmental cheese and a bottle of wine," the man was arrested as he slowly walked back to his car, as if he wanted to be caught.
