Appeals court rejects most of Trump's tariffs

The latest: President Trump lamented the decision by what he called a "highly partisan" court. The 7-4 ruling leaves the tariffs in place until October 14 to give the administration a chance to appeal to the Supreme Court.
The higher cost of shipping: The U.S. dropped a tariff exemption for low-value package shipments that was in place for nearly 90 years. Some global postal services are suspending U.S. shipments. Note: Letters and gifts worth less than $100 will remain exempt.

Trump uses firings to test presidential limits

Push it: His quest for unlimited power, including over the Federal Reserve, could prove negative for financial markets, health policy and public trust in institutions, experts say. He alarmed free-speech advocates yet again as he pushed for the FCC to revoke NBC and ABC television-station licenses and ordered a crackdown on U.S. flag burning and desecration.
Canceled: Trump is using a move known as a pocket recission to cancel $4.9 billion in federal funding for foreign aid and peacekeeping without getting approval from Congress. He ended Secret Service protection for Kamala Harris. FEMA employees who warned of a Katrina-style disaster because of Trump employees running the emergency-response agency were put on leave.

Going up: The U.S.' new stake in Intel makes some investors nervous as they predict a new era of government meddling in industry. Corporate America is nervous as well.
Dumped and pumped: Delta will pay more than $78 million to resolve a lawsuit over a 2020 fuel dump by one of its planes that doused tens of thousands of properties in southern California. One of Australia's largest banks apologized for sending automated email messages to tell retail bankers that they were losing their jobs. Wall street banks have hired dozens of senior executives in recent months in anticipation of a rebound in dealmaking.

Red Cross records surge in number of missing people

An unhappy milestone: The number of people reported missing to the Red Cross rose about 70% in five years, driven by conflict and war in Sudan, Gaza and Ukraine, as well as mass migration.
Conflict zones: Israel's military stepped up its action around Gaza City as it ended pauses that allowed for aid deliveries. The U.S. barred Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas from traveling to the U.N. General Assembly in New York, where several U.S. allies are set to recognize Palestine as a state. Countries that promised to give Ukraine security support will discuss specifics next week. Nigeria, Kenya, Somalia and South Sudan are running short on life-saving food for severely malnourished children. Unrest is spreading in Indonesia.

Protests expected in Britain over migrant hotels

Decision: The UK government won a court ruling that means asylum seekers won't be evicted from a hotel where a resident was charged with a sexual assault. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage wants to deport asylum seekers en masse, calling their arrival an invasion that threatens civil society. Limits: ICE staff are contending with long hours and public outrage over their arrests of migrants as well as green-card holders, visa holders, U.S. citizens and people with no criminal record.
