If a large number of rockets or missiles are fired simultaneously in a massive barrage, even a highly effective system can be overwhelmed. There are simply more targets than interceptors available or capable of being launched in a given timeframe.

 * Type of Projectile: The Iron Dome was primarily designed to intercept short-range, unguided rockets and artillery shells. It has shown some adaptability against certain ballistic threats, but it's not specifically an anti-ballistic missile system. Longer-range, faster-moving, or more sophisticated ballistic missiles (like those Iran possesses) present a different and more challenging threat. Israel has a multi-layered air defense system that includes Arrow (for long-range ballistic missiles) and David's Sling (for medium-range missiles), which are better suited for these threats, but even these systems are not 100% impenetrable.
