China at a 'rapid boil' for military action, admiral warns . . . China's military forces are escalating preparations for a military attack against Taiwan in what the commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command calls a "rapid boil." Adm. Samuel J. Paparo said in public remarks that his predecessor warned him before he took over one of the largest military forces a year ago that a conflict with China could take place on his watch. "You know the metaphor of boiling the frog. Well, it's a rapid boil. We notice quick change," Adm. Paparo said of People's Liberation Army operations in remarks at a conference hosted by the McCain Institute on Friday. Washington Times

Un-Kemp'd: Georgia's Republican Governor to Forgo Senate Bid . . . Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday that he will not run for Senate in 2026, dashing hopes that he would help flip Democrat Sen. Jon Ossoff's seat from a state that Donald Trump won in 2024."I have decided that being on the ballot next year is not the right decision for me and my family," said Kemp in a post to X. Kemp, who has been governor of the Peach State since 2019, was often discussed as Republicans' top candidate to win a Senate seat in Georgia, with polls showing him leading Ossoff in a hypothetical matchup. President Trump ended federal funding for gain-of-function research in China, Iran and other countries that have "insufficient research oversight." Gain-of-function research is medical research that alters viruses or other microorganisms to make them more infectious. That type of work was done at the lab in Wuhan, China. Washington Times

Americans say they are concerned about the spread of fake news, but about 8 in 10 say they prefer freedom of speech that allows false information rather than allowing government censorship in an attempt to stop it. A survey of 1,000 registered voters found 85% believed it's a "better approach" to allow free speech even if the speech is "sometimes offensive and inaccurate" than to allow the government to decide what speech is allowed, according to an RMG Research survey. Hegseth Used Multiple Signal Chats for Official Pentagon Business . . . Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth used Signal more extensively for official Pentagon business than previously disclosed, engaging in at least a dozen separate chats, people familiar with his management practices said. In one case, he told aides on the encrypted app to inform foreign governments about an unfolding military operation, the people said. He also used the nongovernmental message service to discuss media appearances, foreign travel, his schedule, and other unclassified but sensitive information, two people said. Wall Street Journal

DHS to Pay Illegal Aliens to Self-Deport . . . The Department of Homeland Security is offering to pay for illegal aliens to return home to their native countries. DHS announced that it would give illegal immigrants $1,000 when they confirm through the Customs and Border Patrol Home app that they have returned to their homeland. The app also facilitates eligible illegal aliens to request financial assistance from the federal government to book their tickets and get the proper travel documentation. Daily Signal
Cinco de Mayo Events Canceled for Fear of ICE Raids . . . Some cities have canceled or severely downplayed Cinco de Mayo events for fear of ICE raids and deportations. Speaking with CNN on Monday, Chicago resident Hector Escobar, president of the Casa Puebla and Cermak Road Chamber of Commerce, said that people in his community are "very scared" of gathering in public with some even considering going back to Mexico. Canada's new PM Carney Seeks New Deals From Talks With Trump . . . Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit President Trump on Tuesday at the White House, their first meeting since Carney became Canada's leader. He has said that his meeting with Trump would mark the start of negotiations to recast the economic and security relationship between the countries. Alberta's premier proposes referendum on separation from Canada . . . The premier of Canada's oil-rich province of Alberta said Monday she will hold a referendum on separation from Canada next year if a citizen-led petition reaches the required number of signatures. Speaking on a livestream address, Danielle Smith said she personally does not support the province leaving Canada and expressed hope of a "path forward" for a strong and sovereign Alberta within a united Canada. At 3-foot-3, Reggie is the tallest living male dog, according to Guinness World Records. Meanwhile, Pearl, a 4-year-old chihuahua from Florida, is the shortest living dog at just 3.59 inches. There's a three feet difference in size between the pups — about the same height as a baseball bat or acoustic guitar, according to Guinness World Records. USA Today
