China signals, ever so obliquely, that it's more open to trade talks . . . China has signaled that it is becoming more open to engaging in trade negotiations with the Trump administration, according to two blogs closely associated with China's state apparatus, even as Beijing maintains a defiant stance in the trade war. After three months of bluster and tariffs so high they have all but curtailed trade between the world's two biggest economies, both sides now appear to be softening their rhetoric ever so slightly. This comes amid new data showing that the trade war is already damaging both sides. Washington Post
These countries will talk a lot, but they'll come to the table. Americans need their iPhones, and China needs to be able to make them. Trump is maintaining a cool head as others decompensate. He's rolling the dice, for sure, but he may win big.
Trump tells business chiefs he needs 'little bit of time' as US economy shrinks . . . President Donald Trump has asked for more time on the US economy as it contracted for the first time in three years, stoking recession fears. He said the figure was misleading because companies had stockpiled imports ahead of his imposition of tariffs. Trump, however, said $8tn (£6tn) of inward investment had been promised, which he argued would restore American manufacturing prowess. The US economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.3%. BBC
He's playing the long game. So did Reagan in the early 1981-82 when the Fed acted to curb inflation, causing a recession, which ended by the time he was running for reelection.

New York Post
Well, apparently, most white guys are using a different code.

Texas and the Promise of 'Universal' School . . . With a stroke of his pen this Saturday, Gov. Greg Abbott will make every school-aged child in Texas eligible for education choice. It's a historic victory for education freedom, long sought after by the school choice movement. Texas is now the 16th state to enact a "universal" education choice policy for which every K-12 student is eligible. Although every K-12 student in Texas is technically eligible, only a small number will actually get access to the accounts. The Legislature allocated $1 billion, which is barely 1% of the $97.1 billion in state K-12 education funding. Daily Signal

In the six weeks since Israel resumed its war in Gaza, Israeli forces have dramatically altered its map, declaring about 70 percent of the enclave either a military "red zone" or under evacuation, according to the United Nations, and pushing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians into ever-shrinking pockets. The Israeli military says its evacuation orders allow civilians to flee ahead of fighting, and those who remain could be considered combatants. Washington Post

Why young voters flocked to Canada's Conservatives . . . As Mark Carney settles into the role of Canada's prime minister, he will not only have to take on US President Donald Trump, but also wider divisions within his own country. Among those is a generational divide, with young voters who are concerned about housing unaffordability, crime and the cost of living coalescing around the Conservatives. It's a reversal from 2015, when youth voted in record numbers, helping sweep Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau to power. BBC
