Trump vows to take over Gaza

REUTERS/Leah Millis Trump's Gaza proposal Donald Trump's jaw-dropping statement that he would like the US to take control of and redevelop the Gaza Strip might have sounded like it came from nowhere, but it was in keeping with his new administration's expansionist ambitions. In a swift response to Trump, Saudi Arabia said it would not establish ties with Israel without the creation of a Palestinian state. Trade war The US Postal Service said it would temporarily suspend parcels from China and Hong Kong, after Trump ended a trade provision this week used by retailers including Temu and Shein to ship low-value packages duty-free to the US. Trump said he is in no hurry to speak to President Xi Jinping to try to defuse a new trade war between the world's two largest economies sparked by his 10% tariffs on all Chinese imports. In other news Swedish police said there was no evidence of "ideological motives" behind a mass shooting at an adult education center in Orebro, and warned of misinformation spread on social media. At least 11 people died and many others were wounded in the shooting. Several metro stations in Brussels were closed after a shooting at the central Clemenceau station, the Belgian prosecutor's office said. No injuries were reported. The suspects fled into the metro tunnels after the shooting incident, a source said. Residents of Colombia's troubled Catatumbo region, near the eastern border with Venezuela, are weighing whether to return home after attacks by a rebel group displaced at least 50,000 people over several weeks. Business & Markets   Alphabet said it will spend $75 billion on its AI buildout this year, 29% more than Wall Street expected, and investors signaled disappointment at a missed cloud revenue target. Today, global stocks were falling after the company's disappointing earnings knocked Wall Street futures. Chinese companies, from chip makers to cloud service providers, are rushing to support DeepSeek's artificial intelligence models, spurring analysts to hail a "watershed moment" for the industry. All eyes are on the French capital next week to see if Trump's administration can find common ground with China and nearly 100 other nations on the safe development of artificial intelligence. France, eager to promote its national industry, will be hosting the AI Action Summit in Paris, alongside India. Japan's Nissan is set to call off merger talks with rival Honda, a source said, abandoning a $60 billion plus tie-up that would have created the world's third-largest automaker.
