REUTERS/Ahmad Al-Kerdi Middle East The Israeli military piled more pressure on Lebanon's Iran-backed Hezbollah, saying it was conducting "limited, localized, targeted operations" in Lebanon's southwest, expanding its incursions into a new zone. Hamas leader-in-exile Khaled Meshaal said the Palestinian group would rise "like a phoenix" from the ashes despite heavy losses, and that it continues to recruit fighters and manufacture weapons. We also look at the growing dissent the group faces in Gaza. United States The Category 4 Hurricane Milton was expected to grow larger today on its way to Florida, still reeling from the devastating Hurricane Helene. Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris led Republican Donald Trump by a marginal three percentage points - 46% to 43% - as the two remain locked in a close race to win the election, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. In other news Scientists John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton won the Nobel Prize in Physics for discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning within artificial neural networks. Physics is the second Nobel to be awarded this week, following the medicine prize. Local volunteers who have helped to feed Sudan's most destitute during 17 months of war say attacks against them by the opposing sides are making it difficult to provide life-saving aid amid the world's biggest hunger crisis. Russian forces have entered the outskirts of the eastern Ukraine frontline city of Toretsk, less than a week after the fall of the bastion town of Vuhledar. Separately, Ukraine's military said it shot down 18 Russian drones overnight. Business & Markets   Nike's ongoing struggles are giving Adidas a chance to keep taking market share from its larger US rival, but the German brand will have to work harder to keep shoppers interested in its key Samba and Gazelle terrace sneakers. In more news from China, the country has imposed temporary anti-dumping measures on brandy imports from the European Union, hitting brands from Hennessy to Remy Martin, after the 27-state bloc voted for tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
