Zelenskiy meets Trump

'Victory plan': Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Donald Trump met in a closed-door session to discuss the plan. A U.S. official called it a repackaged request for more weapons and a go-ahead to use long-range missiles against Russia. Trump touted his ties with Zelenskiy as well as with Vladimir Putin. The U.S. Justice Department charged three members of Iran's Revolutionary Guards with a hacking attack on the Trump campaign.
Red lines: Putin said he would consider using nuclear weapons if the West allows Ukraine to strike deep inside Russian territory with its missiles. Is it blackmail or a bluff? Analysts discuss.

Who owns that AI copyright?

Not the artist: Jason M. Allen asked a Colorado federal court to reverse a U.S. Copyright Office decision that rejected protection for an award-winning image he created with AI. Investors want to know more about power needs for AI and advanced computing to determine whether they should continue considering the sector as sustainable. The U.S. fined a political consultant $6 million over fake robocalls that mimicked President Biden's voice. And OpenAI is moving away from a non-profit structure, a move that could have implications for how the company manages AI risks.
Banks and strikes: Italian lender UniCredit wants to buy Germany's Commerzbank. The Germans are not crazy about this idea. Volkswagen rejected union demands in Germany as workers threatened to strike against layoffs and the threat of plant closings. The U.S. is getting ready for a big port strike as Montreal prepares for a smaller one. Boeing and its striking union failed to make progress in wage talks.

Helene cuts deadly path through southeastern U.S.

Chaos: Helene hit the Florida coast as a category-4 hurricane. The storm caused widespread destruction through Florida and Georgia and brought heavy flooding to the Carolinas. At least 43 people died, and more than 4 million homes and businesses lost power. Tropical Storm John may turn back into a hurricane and strike Mexico's Pacific coast for a second time.
Boundaries: Tuvalu is losing its land to rising seas. Reuters visited the Pacific Island nation to interview residents about their anxiety over their future, and to explore the government's attempts to change the law of the sea to establish Tuvalu's basis to continue existing as a sovereign state.
