Morning Jolt: ‘The Front Line Starts at the Water’s Edge’: The War as Seen from Odesa

On the menu today: My coverage of life in Ukraine moves from the capital of Kyiv down south to Odesa, where I witness Ukrainian soldiers showing off their new electronic anti-drone rifles, see old grandmothers working on creating camouflage netting, learn where you can crowdsource the purchase of a self-propelled howitzer, and have a wide-ranging conversation about President Zelensky and the challenges of running a democratically elected government during wartime. And then I was in a room full of joyous, screaming children and bunnies.

The View from Odesa

Odesa, Ukraine — The mood in Odesa is different, simultaneously more relaxed and more tense than Kyiv. More relaxed because this is a beach-resort city, the vacation destination of choice for many Ukrainians and foreigners before the war. And plenty of Ukrainians are still enjoying the summer sun.

But Odesa also feels more tense because late last month, Russia launched another barrage of attacks on this city, destroying most, but not quite all of the critical port facilities ...
