Breaking: Trump Says He’s a Target of Special Counsel’s January 6 Probe

Former president Donald Trump said Tuesday he has received notice from special counsel Jack Smith that he is a target in the criminal investigation into efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

"Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden's DOJ, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation, and giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Trump is already facing 37 felony counts as a result of Smith’s separate investigation into the former president’s alleged mishandling of classified documents.

Those charges include willful retention of national-defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, and making false statements and representations.

The next hearing in that case is scheduled for Tuesday. Trump’s attorneys have sought to delay the trial until after the 2024 presidential election. Trump is currently the frontrunner in the Republican primary, leading second-place Ron DeSantis by 33.5 points, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average.

Trump, who was also indicted in Manhattan on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, is facing a separate criminal investigation by a Georgia state prosecutor into his alleged efforts to influence 2020 election results in the Peach State.
