The media and gun control advocates in academia predicted disaster in Brazil when Bolsonaro was president and increased gun ownership by over 600%. When the socialist Lula took over on January 1st, he signed an executive order banning sales of guns and ammunition, banning concealed carry, limiting people to a maximum of three guns, and more those academics predicted that murder rates would fall. Well, they were wrong that Bolosnaro’s policy would increase murders. The murder rate fell dramatically under Bolsonaro. Since there was such a dramatic change in Brazil’s gun control laws and these academics are constantly claiming gun control will reduce murder rates, I contacted 12 prominent gun-control academic advocates, and I offered a $1,000 bet on if Brazil’s homicide rate would go up or down during the next two years. I would have been willing to change the bet, but none were willing to bet me. I wrote a piece in The Federalist that discussed the bet. Here are the academics that I approached. Dan Webster, Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University Phil Cook, Duke University Jens Ludwig, University of Chicago John Donohue, Stanford Law School Andrew Morral, Rand Corporation Garen Wintemute, UC Davis David Hemenway, School of Public Health, Harvard Chris Koper George Mason University Mark Siegel Boston University Adam Winker, UCLA Paul Helmke, Indiana University Frank Zimring, University of California at Berkeley Let me know if you have any suggestions on other prominent gun control advocate academics who should be approached. This past Wednesday, I testified again in Delaware before the House Judiciary Committee.on a bill requiring licensing and training to own a gun. Unfortunately, Dan Webster, one of the above academics who refused to bet me, provided bogus information to the legislators claiming that gun licensing reduces crime. I did television shows that covered the gun control debate after the Allen, Texas attack on Real America's Voice and how the homicide rates are rising faster in blue cities on NTD News. On radio, I covered a range of issues, including the ADL's false claim that mass murderers are conservative right-wingers on the Lars Larson show, the Joe Pags' and Joe Piscopo's shows to discuss the gun control debate, and recent mass public shootings, how to stop school shootings on the Michigan Talk Network, and the push to increase the age to own a gun to 21 on the Bill Martinez show. I also wrote an op-ed with a couple of Nevada State Senators about a bill dealing with "ghost" guns that appeared in both the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Reno Gazette-Journal, the largest and third largest newspapers in the state. In other news, we also have a post on how the media describe the Allen, Texas mass murderer as a conservative, but most people don't know that this supposed conservative praised the trans activist who murdered the people at the Nashville Christian school. The number of Red Flag law cases is exploding in New York, up over 1,000 percent, with police departments so overwhelmed that they cannot look after violent crimes. In Israel, there is a serious move to make it easier for Israelis to carry guns for protection. Our collection of the bias in entertainment police shows on guns continues. CBS's SWAT has an episode showing two instances where homeowners failed to successfully use a gun defensively. In one case, the homeowner was wounded and lost "everything." In the other case, not only wasn't the homeowner able to stop the attacker, but the robber was able to take the homeowner's machine gun and use it to shoot at the police. Two other shows on CBS (Blue Bloods and True Lies) also have criminals using machine guns. We have also continued collecting cases where people legally carrying guns in public have stopped crimes. Here are the cases that we collected for January. I want to note with great sadness that my very good friend Carl Covitz has passed away. Carl has been my friend for over three decades. He was someone who I could talk to about anything, and he was a supporter of mine. His loss is a real loss to me and the country. If you haven’t already seen it, I testified before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security. The hearing’s title was: “Examining Uvalde: The Search for Bipartisan Solutions to Gun Violence.” A video of my testimony is available here. It does a good job of briefly summarizing much of our research.
