Breaking: U.S. Supreme Court stays ruling that suspended abortion-pill approval

The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday temporarily blocked a federal court’s ruling that suspended the FDA’s approval of the abortion pill.

Justice Alito issued the administrative stay of U.S. District Judge Kacsmaryk’s ruling dealing with the circulation of mifepristone, one of two drugs commonly involved in a chemical abortion regime. The stay applies until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

After Kacsmaryk’s order, the Department of Justice appealed the decision in the case, which has now been escalated to the Supreme Court.

"The Court does not second-guess FDA's decision-making lightly," Kacsmaryk wrote in the 67-page opinion. “But here, FDA acquiesced on its legitimate safety concerns — in violation of its statutory duty — based on plainly unsound reasoning and studies that did not support its conclusions.”
