Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain died Thursday at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace announced.
The 96-year-old monarch “died peacefully” at Balmoral Castle, her large estate in Scotland, the palace announced on social media.
The queen had suspended work engagements after doctors ordered her to rest, The Guardian said. It was confirmed Wednesday that the queen had canceled an upcoming virtual privy council meeting.
“After a full day yesterday, Her Majesty has this afternoon accepted doctors' advice to rest. This means that the privy council meeting that had been due to take place this evening will be rearranged,” the palace said.
Armed guards are now in front of the gates of Balmoral and it appears that temporary fencing has been erected, 7NewsDC reported.
All of the queen’s children have either already arrived or are traveling to the castle, BBC reported. Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, is there, while Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, is en route.
“Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have travelled to Balmoral,” a Clarence House spokesman said. Prince Edward, the Count of Wessex, and his spouse Sophie are also on their way. Princess Anne is currently already in Scotland.
Prince William, son of Prince Charles and one of the queen’s grandchildren, is traveling to the property, according to the publication. Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, also plans to depart for Scotland but without Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, BBC reported.
Prime Minister Liz Truss, the newly selected replacement for Boris Johnson who represents the Conservative Party, expressed her sympathies with the Royal Family.
“The whole country will be deeply concerned by the news from Buckingham Palace this lunchtime,” she said. “My thoughts – and the thoughts of people across our United Kingdom – are with Her Majesty The Queen and her family at this time.”
