9/11 Anniversary: Bringing Out the Best

Tom Sileo

September 9, 2022

Firefighters raising an American flag from the rubble. Ordinary civilians joining rescue workers to search for survivors. Democrats and Republicans singing “God Bless America” together on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.

If you aren’t old enough to remember the aftermath of 9/11, it might seem hard to believe how our country came together after it was attacked. It did happen, however, and to many, those days and weeks still seem like yesterday.

The overriding focus on every 9/11 anniversary should be praying for the victims and their families. Nearly 3,000 Americans were murdered by al-Qaeda terrorists on that terrible day, and our utmost priority must always be making sure that those innocent people are never forgotten. My family will be paying our respects next week at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York, which I urge everyone to visit.

‘Big Guns’: How Decades of Shrewd, Calculated, Bigoted Gay Rights Propaganda Deceived the World Into Thinking Their ‘Enemies’ Are the Bigots

Tom Gilson

September 7, 2022

You’ve heard this, right? “Christians are bigoted, intolerant, repressive, and wrong for opposing homosexuality and the transgender movement.” If you think it’s true, you’d better take note of where it came from. It may be the common wisdom these days, but it’s uncommonly foolish, and it comes from uncommonly deceptive sources.

Too often we think the question of homosexuality and transgenderism has just one side: whether same-sex intimacy, same-sex marriage, and transgender transitioning are right and good for the persons who want to do it. There we’re talking about people we interact with every day: friends, family members, classmates and colleagues.

There’s another side to go with it, though: Christians’ response to homosexuality. This one I consider darker than the other — but that’s not because Christians are as bad as we’re made out to be. It’s because we’ve been targeted.

White Guilt Has No Place in the Pulpit

Caitlin Bassett

September 7, 2022

On a Sunday morning not too long ago, I went to meet the Lord at church. Instead, I was met with a political sermon disparaging my class, my race, my nationality and my heritage.

The sermon took aim at what the pastor deemed to be three specifically white, middle-class, American values. There are only two I can remember: productivity and self-determination. He made them out to be negative values — values that undermine the Gospel and lead us away from a truly Christlike life.

My heart sank. I had not been to church in months. The hymns, the public reading of Scripture, the liturgy of an Anglican service — it was all bringing such peace to my anxiety-prone heart and making me feel a little more at ease in this new city to which I had recently moved. That is, until the homily.

Why I Am an ‘Extremist’

John Zmirak

September 5, 2022

Why are so many highly-qualified, intelligent people who share our basic principles and reject the left’s insanity so … useless? I don’t mean “useless” like stuff in your storage unit that you can’t bear to throw away. Some of that might theoretically come in handy, should your situation change.

No, I mean useless in a much more profound, almost metaphysical sense. There is no English word that quite conveys what I mean here, so I must reach into Yiddish. The expletive “Schmuck!” gets yelled at people who are proving themselves useless, annoying, obstructive. It originally referred to the piece of discarded flesh left over from circumcision — something which you can see why pious Jews would regard as the quintessential waste product. It’s the piece of a boy that marked him off as not being one of God’s people, which God Himself commanded his parents remove.
