We Aren't Asking for Help Just For Kicks.

Do you like classic movies? Remember the scene from The Treasure of the Sierra Madre where ex-pat hobo Humphrey Bogart pesters a well-dressed dude (played by John Huston), asking him "Will you stake a fellow American to a meal?" It proved so popular that even Bugs Bunny made fun of it.

Here at NR, we are not new to asking fellow Americans (and Canadians, and Aussies, and Europeans of all stripes) for help in keeping NR surviving. Is our stake overdone (rimshot!)?

Well, while the frequency of appeals and webathons may come across as. . . pestering . . . we are hoping this particular effort may be seen, deservedly, differently.

Fact is, NR, having gone through some rough periods, is setting itself up to become – man oh man would this thrill Bill Buckley – self-sustaining. Not right now. And not in a year. But . . . soon? Yeah, it's looking that way. It looks as if some day, in this very decade, NR may not need to ask to be staked to any meals.

But first: The Fall 2017 Webathon, now under way, is asking for NR's more consistent readers and fans to stake us to this bright future, by helping us make important investments, now, that will result in NR not only being able to bring its influential and important conservative voice to many (many!) more people, but in balancing the books on an annual basis. To dry up the seas of red ink that have plagued us for over six decades.

Charlie Cooke explains in part what one of these investments is about. Please read his important piece. Know that our entire four-point effort boils down to this: We seek to raise $200,000 to

1.   Hiring a tech guru for NRO's burgeoning podcast operation,

2.   Obtaining related video software (an expenditure we are confident will result in significant new income),

3.   Hiring a revenue officer (another major expenditure, but with an anticipated result of multiples in revenue), and

4.   Expanding our summer intern project.

Inspired? I hope so. Please help NR by making a donation here. You can contribute via PayPal here if you prefer. And you can send a check, made payable to "National Review" and mailed to 19 West 44th Street, 17th Floor, New York, NY 10036.

Many thanks.

P.S.: We promised when we launched that Webathon that the price you would pay for enduring these email appeals is to have access to a Bill Buckley blast-from-the-past piece that you will thoroughly enjoy. Promise kept!
