That is why the Church in her wisdom always marks the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul and the early Church martyrs around this time of year. And, in the U.S., it happens to come at a time when the secular calendar also focuses on freedom. A few years ago, Robert Royal wrote The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century: A Comprehensive World History, and the book is exactly that.
