Morning Jolt: The Fowler Labor Day Pinch-Hit Edition

National Review

Morning Jolt
. . . with Jim Geraghty

September 1, 2014

Dear Jolt Fan,

Big Jim labors mightily through the year, so we give him off today so he can wipe off the flop sweat, catch his breath, and maybe even ghostwrite a few five-star Amazon reviews for The Weed Agency.

I thought I would do what any weak pinch-hitter would do: delve into the NR archives for a welcome article or two for your enjoyment. Instead of the upcoming elections, I'll stick with bygone ones. So . . .

  • You should find Bill Buckley's account of the Reagan-endorsing 1980 Republican Convention in Detroit a tremendous read.
  • Ditto for this (written 50 years ago this week): Bill's dispatches from the Democrats' 1964 convention in Atlantic City, which endorsed LBJ.

So enjoy them.

And remember, Atlantic City is on the water, and also on the water are cruise ships, which reminds me to remind you that there are a few cabins left to be had on the National Review 2014 Post-Election Caribbean Cruise, which will take place November 9–16 on Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, and which features a (literally, well, sorta!) boat load of conservative stars, namely:

Former Congressman Allen West, acclaimed historian Victor Davis Hanson, former senators Jon Kyl and Fred Thompson, former governors Tim Pawlenty and Luis Fortuño, legal experts John Yoo, Ed Whelan, and William Jacobson, liberal-media scourges Brent Bozell and Christian Robey, syndicated columnists Mona Charen, Cal Thomas, and Deroy Murdock, top political strategists Ralph Reed and Ned Ryun, Townhall.com editor Guy Benson, Americans for Prosperity president Tim Phillips, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Michael Ramirez, Claremont Review of Books editor Charles Kesler, NRO editors-at-large Jonah Goldberg and Kathryn Lopez, NR editor Rich Lowry, terrorism and defense experts Bing West, Andrew McCarthy, and John Hillen, policy experts Sally Pipes, Jennifer Marshall, and Christina Hoff Sommers, novelist Michael Walsh, NR senior editors Jay Nordlinger and Ramesh Ponnuru, NR essayists Charles Cooke and Kevin Williamson, NR columnists Rob Long and James Lileks, ace political writers John Fund, Jim Geraghty, John J. Miller, and Eliana Johnson.

What a line-up. What happens that week? Well, first, and this is optional, there is a pre-cruise kick-off on November 8th in Ft. Lauderdale featuring Ambassador John Bolton and Senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. And once you walk up the gangplank on the 9th, here's what you will experience on the Allure of the Seas:

  • nine scintillating seminars featuring NR's editors and guest speakers;
    two fun-filled "Night Owl" sessions;
  • three revelrous pool-side cocktail receptions;
  • a late-night "smoker" featuring world-class H. Upmann cigars;
  • a sunny itinerary: Nassau, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, and Ft. Lauderdale;
  • intimate dining on two evenings (more likely!) with guest speakers and editors.

Sign-up now at www.nrcruise.com. And make sure you tell us which luminaries you wish to dine with over the course of the week (this may be your big chance to check out Jim G's table manners -- they're said to be elegant!).

Okay, enough of this. Jim's back tomorrow. Hooray! Enjoy the day.

God bless,

Jack Fowler
