IRS Fireworks
There were fireworks last night in Washington as the IRS Commissioner sat in the hot seat for a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen faced a barrage of questions, many of which circled back to the lost emails of former Director of Exempt Organizations Lois Lerner. About two weeks ago, the IRS told Congress that it could not provide the communication subpoenaed by the committee because Lerner's computer crashed in 2011. Amazingly enough, six other key IRS officials also had computer crashes, which resulted in the loss of their information as well. To make matters worse, we've since learned that Lerner's hard drive was recycled, or destroyed, making it impossible to attempt to retrieve the data. Mincing words, Koskinen clarified his promise made to the committee in March that he would be transparent and provide all the Lois Lerner emails to Congress. He told Chairman Issa last night, "I said I would provide all the e-mails - we are providing all the e-mails. I never said I would provide e-mails we didn't have." Really?

How Do You Get a Cushy IRS Job?
So one thing I think should be pointed out, by the way, is that Koskinen is a life-long Democratic donor. According to the Washington Free Beacon, he's contributed upwards of $100,000 over the last few decades to Democratic candidates and liberal groups. While we'd like to think that officials could operate and execute on their jobs regardless of political affiliation, that has to come into question here because this is exactly the problem. The political affiliation, the content of speech, is what led to the targeting, and the need to protect Obama and his Democratic administration is what may be fueling a possible cover-up. Even Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill says that Koskinen did a terrible job in the hot seat, saying that he confirmed many people's beliefs that the IRS is "arrogant." It is arrogant when they expect the American public to accept the explanation that emails just simply vanished and they've known for, what appears to be, months.
