The Democracy Alliance Joins Fight for Gun Control

NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS ALERT: Vol. 21, No. 21 05/23/2014

The Democracy Alliance Joins Fight for Gun Control

Fresh off the recent news that anti-gun billionaire Michael Bloomberg plans to spend $50 million to help elect gun control-supporting candidates in November's national elections, a similar plan by the Democracy Alliance has been exposed by the Washington Free Beacon.

The Free Beacon reports, "A secretive dark money group backed by George Soros and other liberal mega-donors is looking to steer nearly $40 million to left-wing groups in 2014 to support high-profile political and policy efforts." Soros, who in 2005 was convicted of insider trading in France, has previously donated millions of dollars to MediaMatters and MoveOn.org, both of which support gun control, the International Action Network on Small Arms, which promotes gun control at the United Nations, and Ready For Hillary, in support of gun control advocate Hillary Clinton's possible campaign for the U.S. presidency in 2016.

Update on Operation Choke Point: Evidence Mounts of Government Policy

Earlier this month, we reported on concerns being raised by the activities of federal banking regulators under the umbrella of Operation Choke Point.  Many have claimed the regulators are using their ratings and enforcement authorities to intimidate banks into refusing or severing business relationships with lawful, though politically-disfavored, industries, including those involved with firearms and ammunition. As we noted in our report, we are aware of situations in which banks have refused or severed relationships with customers in the firearm industry, but the reasons underlying these decisions were often disputed (with the banks claiming one thing and the customer another).  At the time of that report, we were unaware of a "smoking gun" to tie these decisions back to pressure from regulatory authorities.

Media Matters' Fires Blanks in Attack on Reporter

Media Matters -- the self-styled "progressive" watchdog that howls in protest whenever anyone deviates in thought or word from its version of the "progressive agenda" -- confirmed its lack of credibility this week by attempting to smear Fox-5 (Washington, D.C.) investigative reporter Emily Miller over her comments relating to gun control.

On a Fox-5 program and in a MyFoxDC.com article earlier this week, Miller correctly pointed out that firearm-related crime has declined over the last 20 years. On that point, Media Matters didn't disagree. And no wonder. Crime data are readily accessible on the FBI's UCR Data Tool website, within the FBI's annual crime reports, and in numerous reports published by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), such as Firearm Violence 1993-2011. These statistics were also reported in a Pew Research public opinion poll that received widespread attention recently.

Comments Needed on BATFE's Extension of the Multiple Rifles Sales Reporting/Registration Requirements

Since August 2011 BATFE has required Federal Firearm Licensees in states bordering Mexico to fill out special reports whenever two or more of certain types of rifles are sold to the same buyer in the same transaction or within a five-day period. Because these records are not subject to the same destruction requirements as most records of approved transfers, they can be retained indefinitely, effectively creating a partial federal firearms registry. NRA opposes these multiple sales reports because BATFE lacks the statutory authority to require them, they unnecessarily burden FFLs with more federal paperwork, and they only affect law-abiding gun owners because straw purchasers can easily avoid them by going to different shops to make multiple purchases.

Remember What We Are Celebrating on Memorial Day

This weekend, our country will celebrate Memorial Day. We'll cook out, relax, and visit with friends and family. But this holiday weekend is about more than barbeques, swimming pools, and family get-togethers. As we celebrate the Memorial Day weekend, let us keep in mind what we are "celebrating" -- those who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that Americans, and people around the world, would be able to reap the benefits of freedom.

Jersey Gun and Magazine Ban Heads to Gov. Christie

This week, New Jersey's Assembly approved legislation banning ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds and semi-automatic rifles with fixed magazines holding more than 10 rounds. The vote was 44-34.

The legislation, approved by the state's Senate last week, now heads to Gov. Chris Christie's desk. Christie spokesman Kevin Roberts said the legislation "will be carefully examined in the 45-day review period we have prior to taking action."

If Christie signs the legislation, owners of banned guns will have 180 days to exchange or surrender their guns, or render them inoperable.

Ask Your U.S. Representative to Cosponsor and Support "The Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013"

The "Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013" (H.R. 2959)--introduced in the U.S. House by Reps. Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah)--would allow any person who is not prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm under federal law and who has a valid concealed firearm permit, to carry a concealed handgun in any state that issues its own residents permits to carry concealed firearms. Persons carrying a handgun in another state pursuant to H.R. 2959 would be subject to the laws of that state with respect to where concealed firearms may be carried. Similar legislation to H.R. 2959 passed the House in 2011 by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.

Update on the Obama Administration's Proposed Ban on the Domestic Sale of Ivory and Importation of Elephant Trophies

In recent Grassroots Alerts, we addressed the Obama administration's proposal to ban the trade and sale of legally owned ivory within the United States (click here to see the initial alert).  The NRA supports efforts to stop poaching and the illegal trade of ivory, but this proposed ban on legally owned ivory sold domestically will have no impact on poaching of elephants and the illegal ivory trade.  On the contrary, this ban will only affect honest law-abiding Americans by making their possessions valueless.  Please see this New York Times article highlighting the broad spectrum of people who will be harmed by the ban.

Order Your NRA-ILA Yard Signs Today!

It has been estimated that well-placed campaign signs can account for four percentage points on Election Day.  Think back to the 2000 presidential election, where 537 votes in Florida separated George W. Bush from Al Gore, and four percentage points seems like a landslide!  While you are focused on the November 4 election, some gun owners may not be aware of what's at stake for the future of the Second Amendment on Election Day.
