AR15.com News

May, 2014

The schedule has always been busy around here, but now it's getting out of hand. First and foremost though, our sincerest condolences go out to the Geissele family this week. The following email was sent to their dealers:

It is with heavy hearts that we have to send out this email to all of our resellers.

In the last 2 weeks our dear friends and co-workers Robert Evans (Director of Manufacturing) and Barbara Hochwind (Assembly Manager) have passed on to be with the Lord. Both Robert and Barb were instrumental in making Geissele Automatics into the company that it has become.

Robert was a highly experienced machinist and metal worker who could make anything out of metal. No manufacturing problem was unsolvable to Robert. He especially liked working on our "Black Projects" that we do for our men and women in uniform. Barb was one of our first employees, actually working with Bill in our 12x14 basement packaging triggers. As she grew with the company she was in charge of a 10 person assembly department and was the gate keeper for all outgoing quality.

Both Robert and Barb freely shared their skills and knowledge so that Cody and Nate, who are taking their places, can continue to bring the same service and quality to the shooting community.

We send out our thoughts and prayers to their families and friends.

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance as many people hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend, and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events.

The United States of America was created by those seeking a better life. They believed in 'Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness' as 'unalienable rights' which are given to all human beings by their Creator, and for which governments are created to protect. And many since have given their lives to protect that. So enjoy your time with your family and friends, enjoy the long weekend, but never forget.

Many have worked to make this country the greatest in the world, but to no group do we owe more than those who paid the ultimate price. Their sacrifices are the ongoing price we pay for freedom.

Happy Memorial Day to all!

Event Updates

In less than two weeks, the ARFCOM New Dawn Shoot sponsored by Black Rain Ordnance will take place in Cresson, Texas.

We look forward to seeing many of you there, and we have a number of cool events for attendees to participate in. From the 3 gun competition to the helicopter target range, we've added an M-79 range, .22 target range, full auto demos, and much more.

Come out for a weekend of fun May 30 and June 1st! More info can be found at the forum below:

New Dawn Shoot Forum

Giving Opportunity for those who can't make the event:

Our great partners at the charity MercuryOne.org has provided us an opportunity for those ARFCOMMERS who would like to support our upcoming "New Dawn" Charity Shoot, but can't join us in Texas to participate.

As you may know, 100% of the proceeds from our event go to help Gelnn Beck's not-for-profit MercuryOne in their quest to do more, so the government doesn't have to...

Since we all know how much ARFCOM supports our great men and women in uniform, why not send in a fully tax-deductible donation in support of helping those who serve on our behalf.

Here's the link: https://secure.qgiv.com/for/modonate/.

Just select the "Active Soldiers and Veterans Support Fund" and give any amount you can. As we all know, if everyone gives a little, it would me a lot!

To learn more about the ARFCOM's "New Dawn" Charity Shoot, go to: www.newdawnshoot.com.

Hope to see everyone there!

Cola Warrior

May 30th is Cola Warrior 4 The Destroyer. For those not familiar with it, this is a race where competitors navigate obstacles, eat peeps (yes those little marshmallow peeps), run, shoot, and chug 72oz of carbonated beverages.

The goal is to win by having the fastest time, and the hard part is keeping it all down so as not to incur penalties.

It takes place in Liberty, MS. More info is available here.

Night Vision

This weekend we're holding a very small, impromptu, and unofficial night vision event in the DFW area.

This is one of those markets that is very confusing and expensive, so a buy them all to compare strategy does not work very well with high end night vision gear.

For this reason, we're having a number of folks come out, bring what they have, and let everyone try them out. More info is available here.

The goal is to take the technology to the buyer, both in a Texas based venue coming soon (below) as well as a national "tour" in the future. For these, we will have dealer and rep attendance to round out the experience. Stay tuned for more.

Trade Days

Ever since we moved to Texas, we've been embracing the culture. One such nugget is the First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas.

What started more than a century ago as a flea market has become home to some of the most exciting, cutting-edge home furnishings, antiques and collectibles that can be found anywhere.

Over the past 150 years, lots of things have changed in the Original First Monday Park; but the genuine, down-home human relationships between vendors and shoppers are the reason people keep coming back. This is a place where you can slow down, visit and ask questions, talk to collectors and antique dealers and meet the artists and craftsmen who create one-of-a-kind items.

Well starting the 4th of July weekend, ARFCOM is coming to Trade Days!

We will be setting up a store within that venue, open 4 days each month. This will be an evolving alternative to a full time retail store, as we still have the properties sitting up in New York waiting for one of those new businesses New York is luring to snatch it up.

More details will be posted as we get closer and take this idea forward, but save the date and come visit us July 3-6!

Gunstruction Update

Greetings from the GUNSTRUCTION team!

In the past month we've introduced a lot of new parts from companies like VG6, AAC, B5 Systems, Magpul, Mission First Tactical, Fortis Manufacturing, Seekins Precision, Rainier Arms and more. We've also updated the iOS and Android Apps to bring all those new parts to you on your phone and tablet devices. If you're running mobile, be sure to hit your App Store to Update ASAP.

If you're on the fence about picking up GUNSTRUCTION from the iOS App Store, there's no reason to fret any longer. Go download GUNSTRUCTION Lite to get a taste of what GUNSTRUCTION mobile has to offer. Once hooked, you can easily upgrade right from within the app to unlock the full feature set, including paint and photo modes!

Also launched for all platforms is our Dealer Links program, giving you an even faster, easier way to purchase parts for your AR15 from trusted vendors.

Finally, we want to take a minute to talk about the future of GUNSTRUCTION. Starting this summer, the GUNSTRUCTION team will be working to bring all the things you love about our program to more of your favorite weapons platforms! More details to follow - let the speculation begin!

3-Gun Essentials

Hard Vs Soft Focus

By: Chris Andersen, 3-Gun Nation Pro Shooter

Hard focus gets mentioned a lot when discussing shooting fundamentals, but it is not always clearly understood. Your level of focus on difficult shots can be the difference between a one-shot hit, or possibly ruining your match with a bunch of misses.

If you don't clearly understand how it's defined, walk through the following steps with me and you can see what I mean. Pick a random object, a coin for example and hold it up and examine it:

Soft focus: I see a round, silver object approximately ½ inch in diameter, a dime. I am still completely aware of my surroundings and objects in my peripheral vision are still in focus.

Medium focus: As I sharpen my focus I see the raised edge of the coin and the profile of Roosevelt's head. As these details become clear, the width of my peripheral vision is reduced, and my focus on the objects around me softens.

Hard focus: With hard focus I get an extremely crisp picture of all of the details on the coin: The texture of the lettering, any imperfections or scratches are perfectly visible in all their detail. Everything outside of those very crisp details on the coin is fuzzy.

Unless you thread needles for a living, you generally walk through your day to day with a soft focus on your surroundings because that is usually all that is required. Even more precise, dexterity oriented skills like dialing a phone, or writing, generally do not require more than a medium level of focus to do successfully. Because this is not a regularly practiced skill, it is important to sharpen it if you are serious about competition shooting.

This level of focus needed for successful long range shots with your pistol or rifle. Hard focus is paramount for getting good first-shot hits on the critical long shots that can drastically affect your finish in a match. Hard focus makes you a better long range shooter, because the extreme attention to detail that comes with it makes for better decision-making when you are on the clock.

There are some very easy ways to condition your eyes to quickly get to the level of focus needed for these hard shots. One of the obvious ways is in dry fire. Sight pictures on hard targets in your practice sessions will help tremendously. But that conditioning doesn't have to even necessarily involve a firearm.

The process I described with the dime involves all of the same steps that you use to get a hard focus on your pistol's front sight or your scope's reticle. Conditioning yourself with quick transitions from soft to hard focus on random objects can be just as good for your eye speed as dry-fire. Try practicing these transitions while spending time on the couch at home, or at your desk at work. What you are doing is essentially cross training for your eyes. The fact that this can be done in everyday situations can mean performance gains with less time spent on the range, netting you free practice with very little sacrifice.

Time spent in practice forcing your eyes to achieve and hold a hard focus will also help with concentration, which directly translates to match finishes. Conditioning yourself to achieve this level of focus more often insures that that you can avoid those moments in a match where you may lose track of your sights, causing your stage scores suffer.

So try it yourself. Take a couple weeks and do some structured practice both in dry fire and in your day to day. It will be like taking regular trips to the gym for your eyesight, with no monthly membership. And I think you will find with a little time spent, your eyes will be working faster than ever!

Lehigh Ammo

We've been testing subsonic 194gr Maximum Expansion ammo from Lehigh Defense for a few weeks now, and have not yet found any situations where it has not performed as designed. This is the suggested round for SBRs.

This is premium hunting or self defense ammunition, not what you'd buy to plink or target practice with. These rounds have been providing one-shot stops on hogs so far out of an 8" 1/7" 300BLK AR with full expansion on every round.

From their description:

This bullet offers the only expanding monolithic Subsonic Bullet in the world providing devastating silent performance.

We've got a limited amount of this ammo in stock at a significantly discounted price, but only for a limited time.

TNVC / Scuderia Corsa Ferrari Racing

Jeff Westphal drives the #63 Ferrari 458 for Scuderia Corsa, the Los Angeles based Ferrari team competing in its first full season of Grand-AM. With TNVC as a sponsor, Jeff brings you a behind the scenes perspective on the ARFCOM forums. If you haven't seen the thread yet, be sure to check it out and look for updates before and after each race!

This month, Jeff was racing at the historic and very picturesque Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California.

We had a chance to spend the weekend with TNVC and Jeff, and despite everything Jeff has posted on these boards about how busy his schedule is, it does not even begin to cover it.

Starting with the short amount of time they had to arrive, practice and set the car up, which rolled right into qualifications, there was a lot of work crammed into a couple of days. In addition were the countless meetings, autograph sessions, time to meet and talk with all of the fans, friends, and family in attendance. What little time was left allowed for a bite here and there, and a few hours of sleep.

With two long endurance races behind them, and a long gap between Sebring and this race, this short sprint left little room for error. I can tell you that it was exciting to watch Jeff come from their qualifying 13th place up to 4th in a few short laps. One by one, he took advantage of the course and methodically passed those in front of him before coming in for a driver change.

It was an exciting race to watch, and leaves one with a full appreciation of what it takes to be successful in racing. Never mind the business of getting the team funded, the logistics of getting everything to the right place at the right time, or even the painstaking setup and maintenance of a fine-tuned racing machine, but the amount of strategy and flawless execution that is required to do well is astounding. Definitely no room for any sort of mistake.

One team impressively maintained the lead for the entire race, only to run out of gas in the last turn of the final lap... Jeff has his update up on the thread so you can read about it from his perspective.

Thanks to Jeff, Vic @TNVC, and everyone else that made the weekend special! Any of you that find yourselves at one of Jeff's races, be sure to stop by Scuderia Corsa and say hi.

How NRA programs defend the Second Amendment

NRA Foundation-funded junior rifle team at the NRA National Matches in Camp Perry, Ohio

Educating our future generations on our rights to bear arms

Fairfax, Virginia - The NRA Institute for Legislative Action isn't the only part of our large organization that protects America's shooting traditions. In this piece by NRA Event Support Coordinator Peter Lawess, we learn how a different section of the NRA does its part for our freedoms.

Defending Freedom through Education: How NRA's non-political branch protects the Second Amendment

In recent years, droves of NRA members and supporters across the country have joined in an effort to halt the legislative attacks on our Second Amendment rights. Many have voiced their opinions, solicited signatures for petitions, advocated for political candidates, and shared news and information. Seeing as the NRA is the country's oldest civil rights organization and known for its acceptance of political discourse, many are unaware or confused that there is a strictly non-political branch of the National Rifle Association: The NRA Foundation and its fundraising arm, Friends of NRA. Knowing the difference between the activities of the National Rifle Association and The NRA Foundation is necessary to fully understand the organization of the NRA and its mission to protect the right to keep and bear arms.

While lobbying and campaigning are necessary to combat current anti-gun legislation, the very necessity to engage in these activities reveals that a larger battle is being lost. Widespread ignorance about firearms is allowing more and more Americans to have their beliefs about the Second Amendment shaped by equally ignorant, anti-gun biased media and political figures. The only way to deter future threats to our Second Amendment freedoms is to provide the education that our country currently lacks.

Educational organizations and events have historically been most influential in exercising and upholding the right to keep and bear arms. The National Rifle Association itself was founded "to promote rifle marksmanship on a scientific basis" and correct the firearms training shortcomings of the Civil War. Teddy Roosevelt noted that young people shot less over time while he was in office and set to correct it by establishing the National Matches and what would become the Civilian Marksmanship Program. These organizations were founded to educate and provide citizens the opportunity to shoot, long before "gun control" became part of America's vernacular. We see that the continuation of the Second Amendment first and foremost depends on access to firearms education, training and the shooting sports.

The NRA Foundation protects the Second Amendment as the country's leading charitable organization in support of the shooting sports. The vast majority of its funds go to non-profit youth programs. The organizations that The NRA Foundation supports such as 4-H, JROTC, Boy Scouts, and junior shooting teams allow young people to learn about firearms and participate in the shooting sports at varying levels, from beginners courses to national-level competitions. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program is almost exclusively funded by The NRA Foundation, helping teach millions of children to avoid firearms accidents. The NRA Youth Education Summit, completely funded by The NRA Foundation, gives high school students a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about American history and government in the nation's capital. Altogether, The NRA Foundation uses funds raised through Friends of NRA to educate people in the safe and responsible use of firearms. This is absolutely imperative to protect the Second Amendment for future generations since it is guarded first and foremost by those same responsible, educated people.

Classified as a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, The NRA Foundation's mission is strictly educational and political activity is strictly prohibited. If a 501(c)3 organization is found to be engaging in political activity, it loses its tax-exempt status with no opportunity to reapply for a 501(c)4 classification that would allow some political activity (NRA is classified as a 501(c)4 organization). Contributions to The NRA Foundation are tax-deductible, whereas those to the National Rifle Association are not, allowing The NRA Foundation to raise more funds than otherwise would be possible. In this case, defending freedom requires our supporters to leave political issues aside when associating with The NRA Foundation and Friends of NRA.

There has never been a better or more important time to support The NRA Foundation and Friends of NRA. In 2013, Friends of NRA set a fundraising record of $32 Million that will be distributed in grants to nonprofit organizations all over the country. The Second Amendment supporters ought to be encouraged that despite ongoing threats to our rights, millions of Americans are coming together to invest in the future of the shooting sports with unprecedented determination.

This one of a kind event seeks to give police officers, their instructors, supervisors & managers the opportunity to immerse themselves in rifle-craft for one to three days in an effort to provide them with resources & information designed to benefit their agency's patrol rifle program. So come join us in the suburbs of Detroit for training, competition, and camaraderie!!!

NRA-ILA: Latest Updates

Signs of Anti-Gunner Weakness as NRA Meeting Shines

While the NRA displays its strength at its Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Michael Bloomberg is proving the old adage "there are just some things that money cannot buy." The self-anointed gun control Super Nanny's latest anti-gun groups--Moms Demand Action and Everytown for Gun Safety--are having even worse luck than his first one, Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG).

Gun control lobby continues to ignore the facts about background checks

The Brady Campaign is being intentionally deceitful by claiming "40 percent" of gun purchases are conducted without a background check. You won't read this in their misleading report, but even the notoriously anti-gun Washington Post debunked their "40 percent" whopper, giving it a rating of "3 Pinocchios" for dishonesty. That's because this statistic comes from a 251-person survey conducted nearly two decades ago, in which more than three-quarters of the firearm sales covered in the survey occurred before background checks were mandated by federal law.

Bloomberg Rebrands Gun Control Apparatus Pledges 50 Million to Fight NRA Second Amendment

The New York Times published an article outlining Michael Bloomberg's latest attempt to buy your rights. This time, Bloomberg is dumping $50 million into the gun control cause and consolidating his anti-gun groups Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) and Moms Demand Action under a single organization, Everytown for Gun Safety. According to the article, Bloomberg's goal with the new money and group is to "outmuscle the National Rifle Association."

Feinstein Wants Obama to Pull a Clinton on Firearm Importation

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), sponsor of the federal "assault weapon" and "large" magazine "ban" of 1994-2004, is asking President Barack Obama to direct the BATFE to reinterpret a provision of the Gun Control Act of 1968 to prohibit the importation of various semi-automatic firearms and their parts.
