AR15.com News | Happy St. Patrick's Day to all!
In celebration, we're blowing out stripped billet lowers, for one day only! Check out the link at the right, and get yours while they last. In order to receive prompt delivery, make sure your FFL once submitted has your order number and/or your name on it so we can match it to your order. This last month we've been hard at work on a number of different fronts, including the upcoming New Dawn Shoot in May, relocating staff to TX, as well as getting new products going in manufacturing as well as in the store. We will be sponsoring the Trijicon® World Shooting Championship as well as some others to be announced shortly. On the web site, updates to many of the behind the scenes systems have improved backend performance, and work continues on an updated look for the site to be released later this year. This weekend the 12 Hours of Sebring race was run, and we have a driver's perspective from Ferrari's Scuderia Corsa, brought to you by #63 driver Jeff Westphal, and TNVC. Don't forget next month is the 143rd NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits at the Indiana Convention Center in the center of downtown Indianapolis, IN, April 25-27, 2014!
Event Update
Preparations continue for this year's largest ARFCOM event, the New Dawn Shoot in Texas, March 31-June 1, 2014. In addition to new sponsors like Grace Ammo, Nightforce, TROY, Cabelas and others, we will be featuring new products and vendors including the Shot Cam remote video target system. We are working on side matches with X rail & Crazy Quail along with several others, so users will have many opportunities to engage with vendors in demo bays and get hands on with today's newest products. There will be great raffles for high end guns and silent auctions as well as activities for the kids and who knows, you may even bump into celebrity guests. All of this in addition to the main 3-Gun competition and events like shooting from a helicopter and the various stages. Join us at the New Dawn Shoot; proceeds will be donated to MercuryOne.org. In the meantime get into the event forum and discuss what you want to see at this year's event! New Dawn Shoot Forum

TNVC / Scuderia Corsa Ferrari Racing |
Jeff Westphal drives the #63 Ferrari 458 for Scuderia Corsa, the Los Angeles based Ferrari team competing in its first full season of Grand-AM. With TNVC as a sponsor, Jeff brings you a behind the scenes perspective on the ARFCOM forums. If you haven't seen the thread yet, be sure to check it out and look for updates before and after each race!
From Jeff's latest post regarding this weekend's 12 Hours of Sebring: Just after the 2 days on track leading up to the race, my synopsis on the 12HR circuit is as follows: 1. This track is Mega 2. Can't believe I am here for this historic event 3. Turn 1 is a mother 4. My back is going to be sore after this race The track didn't take too long for me to get comfortable, I had 12 times through start finish over 2 days and 4 sessions, and I was able to do a 2.05.xx on 2 stint old tires, which should put me in the 2.04's on new rubber (pole position was 2.04.2).
It is extremely bumpy, so much so that if you tighten up expecting the hit each lap it ends up hurting worse. Its best to relax and be Raggedy Ann, I expend less energy that way. I found the nighttime here isn't as bad as I expected, the visibility was quite good with our headlights (with "good" being a relative term for 40 meters of visibility). And I cannot wait to take the green flag tomorrow! In qualifying, the top 15 cars of 25 were within .9 of a second, and the top 8 were within .5 second, so the racing should be tremendous, and our #63 Ferrari qualified 5th. I am cautiously optimistic about tomorrow's race due to the fact that this event is notorious for being equally as grueling as the 24HRs of Daytona, so we will head into the race tomorrow Am with our best foot forward, and I will bring the A Game since TNVC expects nothing less! Find out how Jeff did when he posts his AAR on the forum...

3-Gun Essentials | Practice Outside the BoxBy: Chris Andersen, 3-Gun Nation Pro Shooter
Practice for 3-Gun, or any of the practical shooting sports can be extremely difficult if you don't have a good place to train. One of the biggest challenges in training for 3-gun or action shooting can be finding methods for honing some of the skills needed if you don't have access to a bay-type shooting range that allows movement, holster draws, etc. Obviously this sort of facility is ideal for your practice sessions, but when you don't have that available, there is still good viable training to be had at the more conventional ranges when there isn't another option. Table pickups and reloads While the range you are shooting at may not allow holster draws or reloads from your belt, you can still take advantage of your time there to work on picking up your firearm and getting on target quickly, as well as reloading from the staging table at speed. Not only are these great drills to enhance your dexterity and hand speed, they are also likely to be specifically used in some stage designs. Stage your gun in different conditions and in different positions and then visualize starting that major match stage. Concentrating on being perfect in your execution and manipulation will ingrain good habits that will stick with you. Target transitions While you can't shoot at multiple targets at a conventional, laned shooting range you can dry fire or start with a sight picture on a different target in the bay. Make sure you are careful with this, and that the range you are at doesn't have a problem with it. A shooting bay with multiple shooters in it will generally mean that there will be several targets down range for you to get a sight picture on, offering you the opportunity to transition between multiple targets. Obviously only shoot YOUR target. People tend to get upset if you put holes in theirs. Rifle bench shooting drill On slow days at the rifle range try transitions between multiple benches on the firing line: off the side of a shooting bench, the back of a chair, a sandbag on the ground, etc. I like to arrange a different shooting position in multiple lanes and run transitions between them on the clock. Avoid taking a sight picture before running the drills and change the shooting positions up to add difficulty to each shot. Doing this teaches visual patience and will force you to adapt and remain patient under stress. Malfunction drills Conventional ranges are the perfect place to practice clearing malfunctions in your gun. Starting in different conditions, with unknown numbers of rounds in your magazine, or dummy rounds can offer a great opportunity to keep your mental game sharp. 3-Gun in particular is never perfect. So the more surprises you can throw in the mix the more you are going to be honing your problem solving skills. Low port drills Low shooting ports and positions are common at every match. It is usually going to be acceptable to fire under the shooting benches at most ranges. This offers the opportunity to practice transitioning between two completely different positions all while staying in your lane. Getting creative will even allow multiple elements in one drill (i.e. Empty gun table pick up start: Load and take a sight picture on your neighbors target, transition to your target and fire two rounds, transition to a knee and fire 2 rounds on your target under the bench). Shoot some groups With all of the dynamic movement in action shooting, it can be very easy to get bored when you are at a conventional shooting range. But don't let that distract you from the importance of the fundamentals of marksmanship. I always try to begin and end every practice session with some 25, or 50 yard pistol groups, regardless of where I am training. Obviously shooting lanes are perfect for that, and give you the opportunity to make sure your fundamentals are where they should be. Group shooting also allows you the chance to spot errors in your technique that can sneak up on you when you are running around and shooting quickly. Speed in 3-gun comes from taking advantage of every opportunity. So be sure in your training that you are taking advantage of every moment available practice and improve. As you can see those opportunities exist in even the most restrictive of shooting ranges. As always, stay safe, and make sure you are following the rules of the range. But make sure you don't miss another training opportunity!

Contact Your Senators and Ask Them To OPPOSE Confirmation of Anti-Gun Obama Nominee for U.S. Surgeon General As we reported last week, the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee recently voted to confirm President Obama's anti-gun nominee--36-year-old Dr. Vivek Murthy--as United States Surgeon General, clearing the way for Murthy's consideration by the full Senate.
NRA strongly opposes Murthy's confirmation. In a letter to Senate leaders, NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox noted that the U.S. Surgeon General is charged with the important tasks of providing the American public with information to better inform decisions related to their health, and with directing much of the federal government's public health efforts. In order for these roles to be carried out effectively, the public must trust that the Surgeon General's actions and recommendations are based on empirical and scientific evidence, rather than political or ideological motives. Unfortunately, Murthy's record of political activism in support of radical gun control measures raises significant concerns about the likelihood he would use the office of Surgeon General to further his preexisting campaign against lawful gun ownership. The American people deserve a Surgeon General who will carry out the mission of the office unmotivated by political or ideological goals. Given Dr. Murthy's lengthy history of hostility towards the right to keep and bear arms, along with his calls for the full weight of the federal government's health apparatus to be used to target lawful gun ownership, there is strong reason to believe that he would use the influence of the Surgeon General's office to promote gun control. Simply put, confirmation of Dr. Murthy is a prescription for disaster for America's gun owners. We now await Dr. Murthy's confirmation vote in the full Senate. It is critically important that you contact your Senators and ask them to OPPOSE confirmation of President Obama's radically anti-gun nominee--Dr. Vivek Murthy--for U.S. Surgeon General. You can contact your U.S. Senators by using the "Write Your Lawmakers" tool at www.NRAILA.org. You may also contact your Senators by phone at (202) 224-3121. Again, please take action and contact your U.S. Senators today.
H.R. 2959, the Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013 The Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2013 (H.R. 2959) has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressmen Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) and Jim Matheson (D-Utah). The bill would allow any person who is not prohibited from possessing or receiving a firearm under federal law and who has a valid, concealed firearm permit to carry a concealed handgun in any state that issues its own residents permits to carry concealed firearms. Persons carrying a handgun in another state pursuant to H.R. 2959 would be subject to the laws of that state with respect to where concealed firearms may be carried. Similar legislation to H.R. 2959 passed the U.S. House of Representatives in 2011 by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.
H.R. 2959 would not create a federal licensing system, nor authorize the federal government to interfere with the powers of the states to set standards for the issuance of carry permits, nor establish federal standards for carry permits, nor override state laws allowing for the carrying of firearms without a permit. Rather, it would simply require the states to recognize each others' carry permits. This is not a new or untested concept. Since 2004, certain active and retired law enforcement officers have been authorized to carry concealed firearms throughout the United States based on identification issued by the agencies that employ or formerly employed them. Most states that issue carry permits or licenses already have statutes that grant reciprocity or recognition to non-resident licenses or permits under various circumstances. Meanwhile, Right-to-Carry Reciprocity legislation has been introduced in Congress since 1995. - The Supreme Court has ruled that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms for defensive purposes. In District of Columbia v. Heller (2008), the Court ruled that "the inherent right of self-defense has been central to the Second Amendment right" throughout U.S. history, and that the Second Amendment protects "the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation." In McDonald v. City of Chicago (2010), the Court ruled that the protections of the Second Amendment extend to infringements under state and local laws.
- The Seventh and Ninth Circuits, among other courts, have affirmed that the individual right protected by the Second Amendment includes the carrying of firearms in public for self-defense. In the 2012 case of Shepard v. Madigan, authored by Judge Richard Posner, the court ruled that the "confrontations" of which the Supreme Court wrote in Heller "are not limited to the home." The court accordingly held, "A right to bear arms thus implies a right to carry a loaded gun outside the home." The Ninth Circuit similarly held in the 2014 case of Peruta v. San Diego County that Second Amendment protects the right of responsible, law-abiding persons to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense.
- Every state has a concealed-carry firearm permit law. Forty-two states, accounting for two-thirds of the U.S. population, readily issue concealed carry permits or licenses. Thirty-nine have "shall issue" laws, requiring that carry permits be issued to qualified applicants. Four states do not require a license or permit for the lawful carrying of concealed firearms. Only the District of Columbia prohibits entirely the carrying of firearms in public for self-defense.
- Citizens with carry permits are more law-abiding than the general public. In Florida, the state that has issued the most concealed firearm carry permits—due to its large population and the relatively early date of its Right-to-Carry law—only about 0.01 percent of permits issued have been revoked because of firearm crimes by permit holders. Other states that keep such statistics have had similar experiences.
- Violent crime rates have decreased, as the number of Right-to-Carry states has increased. The nation's violent crime rate hit an all-time high in 1991, when only 17 states, accounting for 25 percent of the nation's population, had Right-to-Carry laws. Since then, the number of states in which carry permits are readily available has risen to 42, accounting for 74 percent of the population, and the nation's violent crime rate has fallen to a 42-year low. (Data: FBI.)
- The right of self-defense has been recognized in law for centuries. The Declaration of Independence asserts that "life" is among the unalienable rights of all people. The Second Amendment guarantees the right of the people to keep and bear arms for "security." The laws of all states recognize the right to use force in self-defense. The Supreme Court has recognized that a person "may repel force by force" in self-defense, and is "entitled to stand his ground and meet any attack made upon him with a deadly weapon, in such a way and with such force" as needed to prevent "great bodily injury or death." Beard v. United States (1895). Congress affirmed the right to own guns for protective purposes in the Gun Control Act (1968) and Firearm Owners' Protection Act (1986). In 1982, the Senate Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution described the right to arms as "a right of the individual citizen to privately possess and carry in a peaceful manner firearms and similar arms."
- Concealed carry has proven to be sound public policy in the United States. H.R. 2959 recognizes both the increased popularity of concealed carry and the increased mobility of the U.S. population. The current patchwork of state and local laws and reciprocity arrangements can prove daunting and confusing for even the most conscientious and well-informed concealed carry permit holders. People carrying in good faith and strictly for defensive purposes have been arrested and subjected to prosecution for inadvertent violations, sometimes as a result of voluntarily disclosing their possession of firearms to law enforcement officers. H.R. 2959 allows law-abiding Americans to exercise their rights under the Second Amendment with confidence and peace of mind, while still allowing states to enforce their own standards of conduct and restricted places of carry for those in possession of firearms.

Here, Piggy Piggy... | 2014 is off to a great start with many exciting new things going on in the world of night vision. The FLIR R-Series Thermosight is quite possibly the most exciting in terms of thermal scope technology. The FLIR ThermoSight R-Series is the world's first line of commercial thermal night vision rifle scopes for hunting starting at under $3,500. Lightweight and easy to operate, R-Series delivers rock-solid thermal imaging for seeing predators and varmints in zero light. Add that with the fact that you can choose from several lens options within each different unit, and you have a system that really stands out above the competition.
We were lucky enough to be able to take the FLIR R-Series' out for a spin a few weeks before their official release. Naturally, we wanted to shoot some hogs with them. We felt that live tissue exercises would be extremely appropriate, seeing as how it is the only way to be able to really get a feel for the systems, right!? The TNVC crew and our buddy from FLIR all loaded up and went down to an undisclosed hunting location in North-Central Florida. (Of course we aren't going to tell you where our honey hole is!)
Over a few days we shot around 5 or 6 hogs. Our routine was to start right as the sun started to go down, which was typically around 5:30 p.m. and watch over feeders. We would do this until about 10:00 p.m. or so, then hauled our downed hogs out and back to camp to butcher them up. After we would get everything cleaned up back at camp we rode around looking for hogs with our handheld thermal systems, and then stalk in on them using our R-Series' to engage. In between the times we were watching feeders and stalking hogs, we were back at camp calling in coyotes, watching a spoil pile.
We had a blast with this hunt and really got a chance to put the FLIR R-Series' through their paces. The R-Series has hands down, changed the thermal hunting game. No matter what your budget, you can find a system that will fit your needs. For more info on the FLIR R-Series Thermosight, visit www.tnvc.com.

NRA-ILA: Latest Updates | U.S. Firearm Production Sets Record in 2012: AR-15 Production Up Over 100% The number of firearms manufactured in the U.S. for sale to American customers hit an all-time high in 2012, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' (BATFE) new Firearms Manufacturers and Export Report. American firearm manufacturers produced roughly 8.3 million firearms for sale in the U.S., a new record, up 33 percent from the 6.2 million produced for American customers in 2011. Confusion Reigns as Gun Control Law Takes Effect in Connecticut; Meanwhile NRA Continues the Fight On April 4, 2013, Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy (D) signed Senate Bill 1160 into law, unleashing one of the most draconian gun control laws in the nation on his constituents. Among other things, the 140-page law bans large classes of firearms and magazines that had been obtained lawfully by tens of thousands of Connecticut residents. Limited grandfather provisions apply to those who registered otherwise banned items before January 1, 2014. Others in possession could face felony penalties for violations. President Obama himself was in Connecticut four days after this bill became law, praising it as a model for the nation. NRA Opposes Confirmation of Murthy as U.S. Surgeon General The National Rifle Association strongly opposes the confirmation of Vivek Hallegere Murthy, M.D., M.B.A., as United States Surgeon General. The Surgeon General has the important tasks of providing the American public with information to better inform decisions related to their health and directing much of the federal government's public health efforts. In order for these roles to be carried out effectively, the public must trust that the Surgeon General's actions are based on empirical and scientific evidence, rather than political or ideological motives. NRA-Backed Case A Benchmark Win in 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals The United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled in favor of the right of law-abiding citizens in California to carry a firearm outside the home for self-defense. California law allows local governments to issue concealed and open carry permits, but generally prohibits the carriage of handguns in public places. The San Diego County Sheriff's office further restricts gun permits only to law-abiding citizens who can prove "good cause," meaning they have to show they faced a specific threat to their safety above what the general public faces.
