Breaking News

June 28, 2013

Dear Morning Jolt Aficionados,

Friday's here. Already checking out? Planning to vamoose the office early? Lucky you: Here at NR, the traditional concept of "weekend" is unthinkable: the galley slaves and desk-chained interns know better than to allow a drop in the volume or quality of NRO content.

And now that I have commenced this final pinch-hitting appearance with a particularly embarrassing whiff, I'll get on to the job of suggesting a few NRO selections to get your weekend started right.

On immigration . . .

Gang of Ain't Jonathan Strong has the story on how the House GOP finds the Senate's immigration bill DOA.

Thus Spake Boehner Bob Costa reports the Speaker isn't bluffing when he says immigration legislation won't happen without support from a majority of House Republicans.

Reformers' Semi-Success . . . For Now A great wrap-up of what happened in the Senate battle, the consequences for Rubio, conservative movement fallout, and much more by Andrew Stiles.

More DOMA fallout . . .

Kennedy's Deception Charles Krauthammer writes in his new column that nationalized gay marriage in inevitable, and that Justice Anthony Kennedy "knows that the double rationale underlying his DOMA opinion has planted the seed for going Roe next time."

Roe by Any Other Name Make no mistake, says Mona Charen in her new column: Windsor ends the marriage battle. "Five justices . . . will not be constrained by law or tradition from imposing their views on the nation at the next opportunity."

"Gaseous and Gauzy" Bench Memos boss Ed Whelan reflects on the writings on one Anthony Kennedy.

And then . . .

Vitamin Abortion Jonah Goldberg's new column wonders why "woman's health" isn't about cancer, heart disease, or strokes, but "abortion rights."

Student-Loan Interest-Rate Hike Imminent Brought to you by Senate Democrats. It's a big issue for plenty of folks. With plenty of politics. Betsy Woodruff reports.

Two Tentacles Up Sorta. Frederica Matthews Green likes Monsters University. Sorta.

Apologies to Jim Geraghty. His time slot deserved a better summer-replacement series. Dean Martin Presents the Golddiggers this has not been. He needed Manny Mota or Rusty Staub but got Joe Shlabotnik.

You all have a great weekend. Spend it reserving a cabin on the NR Norwegian Fjords Cruise, reading Lincoln Unbound, Peace, They Say, or The End Is Near, And It's Going To Be Awesome, or all of the above.

And have a kind thought for the beleaguered NRO galley slaves while you're sipping your iced tea by the poolside.

God bless,

Jack Fowler
