The Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition of more than 900 mayors co-chaired by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is set to release new polls Thursday showing widespread support nationwide for universal background checks.

The polls, conducted from Jan. 25 to Feb. 22 by pollster Douglas E. Schoen, found broad support for criminal checks for all gun sales in more than 40 congressional districts and 20 states from Arizona to North Carolina, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. The average support among 41 district polls was 89 percent; the average among 21 statewide polls was 86 percent, according to the mayor's group.

The new poll numbers come as Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Wednesday that he plans to reintroduce a proposal mandating background checks on all gun sales at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Thursday, after talks with a bipartisan group of senators broke down.
