A new horror movie with a "dark take" on Jesus' childhood is sparking outrage before it's even been released.
"The Carpenter's Son" stars Nicolas Cage, FKA Twigs and Noah Jupe.
Magnolia Pictures, the film's distributor, describes it as a story about "a remote village in Roman-era Egypt" that "explodes into spiritual warfare when a carpenter, his wife and their children are targeted by supernatural forces." A "mysterious stranger tries to entice young
Jesus to abandon his devout father's rules," and "The boy is lured in a forbidden world, as a terrified Joseph," played by Cage, "realizes that a demonic power is at work."
The movie is based on an apocryphal, or fictional, gospel that circulated in the first centuries. The text is not part of the accepted canon of sacred scripture.
'The Carpenter's Son' backlash
Backlash to the film has been fierce online.
One Google reviewer called the movie "a disgusting attempt to defame and mock the Christian faith." Another one wrote, "I hate the fact they made a horror movie about Jesus, it's not pertinent, and I also think it could be taken as a very offensive movie for people who believe in him."
Social media has seen similar comments.
Replying to Magnolia's post featuring the trailer, an X user said, "So we're fine with mocking Christianity, but other religions are off limits?"
Another X user said, "You people would dare not do this with Islam but when it comes to Christianity 'yeah let's do whatever we want with it.'"
"The Carpenter's Son" hits theaters November 14.
